Picking the Right Size Storage Unit for Your Car, RV, or Boat

When it comes to picking a storage space or unit for your car, RV, or boat, there’s one simple rule: make sure the space is big enough to accommodate your vehicle.

That sounds easy, but it helps to understand vehicle and unit sizes. At RV Storage Depot, we specialize in indoor storage units for vehicles. Let’s get into some details about vehicles and the storage units that best fit them.

Storage Units for Cars

We all know that cars come in a variety of sizes, from two-door Volkswagen Beetles to large pickup trucks with extra-long cabs and beds. If you need to store a sports car, sedan, truck, or large van, you’ll need a storage unit in the 10x15 to 10x30 size range. Let’s break that down.

  • Compact and Subcompact Cars

These will generally fit into a 10x15 unit. This is the right size for most hatchbacks and two-door cars. However, some of these smaller vehicles can be just over 15 feet long. If that’s your car, you’ll want a 10x20 unit instead. If your car is more than 13 feet long, consider a 10x20 unit. It’s good to have a little extra space in the front and back.

  • Pickup Trucks, Sedans, SUVs, and Minivans

These types of vehicles fit in a normal-sized garage, and also fit in a 10x20 unit. If your car fits in a normal garage, it should fit in a 10x20 unit.

  • Large Cars

This category includes cargo vans, heavy-duty trucks, as well as an extended cab and extended bed trucks. The ideal size for them is a 10x30 unit. We do have 10x25 and 10x27 units as well, and those will probably fit your vehicle as well. Check the length of your vehicle to make sure before you rent.

Storage Units for RVs

RVs come in three size categories, class A, class B, and class C. The sizes they include are counterintuitive, so let’s get them covered.

  • Class A RVs

These RVs are the longest, from 21 to 45 feet. Our longest storage unit is 10x45, so to store with us, ideally, your RV should be no longer than 42 to 43 feet. Most include a master suite in the back which includes a full bathroom and shower. They often have a washer and dryer so you can do your laundry on board as well. Depending on how large yours is, you’ll need between a 10x25 to 10x45 unit.

  • Class B RVs

You’d think that class B RVs would be second longest, but they are the shortest, between 17 to 19 feet long. These can fit into most standard garages. They come with fold-down beds, cabinets, and more. One needs to be careful moving around in this type of RV, but they are excellent for individual travelers or couples. With a class B RV, you’ll need a 10x20 or 10x25 unit.

  • Class C RVs

As far as size goes, class C RVs are right in the middle, between 20 to 31 feet long. They have more space than a class B but are easier to maneuver than a class A. A small family could vacation well in a class C RV. For this type of RV, you’ll need a 10x25 to a 10x35 unit.

Storage Units for Boats

At RV Storage Depot, we allow you to store the types of boats that are small enough that they don’t have to be kept at a dock. Of course, they can still be quite long, up to 42 feet. For shorter boats, 10x20 to 10x30 units will be ideal, while for the longest boats, you’ll need a 10x40 to 10x45 unit.

When it comes to storing a boat, from skiffs to fishing boats, use the same guidelines that you would for a car or RV. Know the length and width, and pick a unit space that is a bit wider and longer than your watercraft. Keep the rig you use to connect your boat to the back of your car in your unit as well. That way you don’t need to lug it around with you, and you won’t forget it when you come in to pick up your boat for a day on the lake or the ocean.

So remember, when you need a great storage unit for your car, RV, or boat, we have you covered at RV Storage Depot. We encourage you to sign up for a unit online, where we have the best prices.
